Well… That Happened

We were in Spain. One of those picture-perfect trips. Me, my husband, my two sisters, and their husbands. Sunshine, beautiful streets, wine, laughter. The kind of vacation you dream about.
The girls decided to go tour a palace while the guys went off to find a motorcycle shop. Fair trade.
Now, if you’ve been to Europe, or are lucky enough to live there, you know washrooms are not always… simple. You either pay, or you go on a hunt for the free ones. And being the thrifty Canadians we are, we were always on the hunt.
So here we are at this stunning palace. We already paid about forty dollars to get in, so naturally, when we saw “free” washrooms, we felt like we’d won.
They were these fancy little outhouse setups. Three stalls. Two had full walls for privacy from the outside courtyard. The third had a door…
My sisters grabbed the two with the walls. Lucky them. I got the one with the door. No problem. I walk in, shut it, and realize… it doesn’t latch.
Okay. Fine. I’ll just hold it shut with one arm. I’ve done harder things.
So there I am, doing my thing, holding the door, thinking I’ve got this completely under control…
Until my iPhone slips out of my pocket.
Straight into the toilet. An outhouse toilet....
That phone was my lifeline to my kids, hundreds of miles away. I gasp, jump up, jeans around my ankles, and in one swift, desperate move, I spin, bend over, and go in for the rescue.
What I did not realize…
Was that in all of this, my butt had gently pushed that door wide open.
I can only imagine what they thought.
“Ah, yes, the Spanish palace experience. Stunning architecture, rich history… and a FULL MOON.”
Humiliated doesn’t even begin to cover it.
But this Canadian? I pulled up my pants, washed that phone as if my life depended on it, and walked out like nothing happened. Head high. Dignity… somewhere questionable.
Meanwhile, my two loving, supportive sisters were outside, absolutely losing it. Laughing so hard they could barely breathe. No help. Just tears and laughter echoing through the courtyard.
